Add a Doubling Cube to your Backgammon Brew

Backgammon is a board game with two players who race to bear off their checkers first. It originally started with just the dice and stones and later on, the doubling cube was thrown in the mix. This is an extra dice that has the numbers two, four, eight, 16, 24, and 32 on each of its sides. The doubling cube is not rolled to get a number of pip moves like the regular dice. This piece is placed on the board when the stakes in the match have been raised. The opportunity to raise the stakes in a backgammon game has definitely made it a lot more interesting.

The doubling cube is used to keep track of the incremental increases in the game stakes. This is initially placed on the bar with the 64 facing up. At this point, no one owns the cube and starting wages stay.

When a player opts to increase the stakes twofold, that player takes the cube from the bar and offers the doubling cube to the opponent. This is called the initial double. When this happens, the match can go either one of two ways. The opponent may accept the offer and place the cube with the number two facing up on their side of the board or the opponent may refuse the offer and forfeit the match.

When the other player accepts the initial double, the stakes are raised twofold and the game continues. The player who accepted is then the owner of the doubling cube. Whoever is the owner at a point in the match is the only player who can redouble the stakes.

When the owner opts to redouble, one only needs to offer the cube to the other player. Again, the other player may either accept and place the doubling cube on their side of the board with the number four facing up or refuse the offer and forfeit.

The doubling cube tracks the increases in the stakes of a backgammon match. A double can be offered at any point during a match. However, after the initial double, the owner is the only player who can redouble. When a redouble is accepted, the doubling cube changes owners and so on. Using this option is very tricky since refusing the offer is also a forfeiting a match. And yet, accepting and offering one depend on how confident you are in your position in the game.
